Blessed Alix le Clerc’s Life History

Alix le Clerc was born on February 2 1576, in Remiremont, Duchy of Lorraine in the Holy Roman Empire, from a wealthy family residing there. All is know of his childhood is that she was very upbeat and exceptionally passionate in music and dance as she the secular life until she developed a serious illness, three years later after moving to Mattaincourt, when she was 21 years old.

her time spent on recuperation was characterized by the reading of a devotional book which she reflected upon leading to her developing the need to seek to a change in her life’s direction. She received a vision of the Blessed Mother, which gave her the answers she needed. From then she decided to care for poor girls who had no access to education as at that time she did not appeal to the life of religious orders.

She had earlier sought advice from Father Dom Peter Fourier, who then assisted in the realization of her aspirations and together with her four friends, they established a community where they could live simply in prayer and instruct young girls in their ways and in the ways of God

Alix and her friends made private vows to Father Dom on December 25 1597, and they opened their first school seven months later in Poussay, then in Mattaincourt in 1599, in Saint-Mihiel in 1602, Nancy in 1603, Point-a-Mousson in 1604, Verdun and Saint Nicholas de Port in 1605, with the schools adopting the name of Notre Dame.

She worked on creating schools that would provide free education to all social classes and all faiths, even protestants, while also tending to the sick in the community. Their vision faced opposition from the hierarchy as her goal was open in nature. They worked to seek autonomy, but they would still be subject to the local bishop, though most important of all, would be be recognized by local religious authorities.

Their constitutions were first approved on March 6 1617 as prepared by Father Dom, by the Bishop of Toul hence the monastery in Nancy became their first of in the congregation. She and the other members took public vows on December 2 1618. She took the name Teresa of Jesus and was later elected prioress of the community in its first formal elections.

From there on, she established and developed the congregations’ new houses, making sure they get recognized one by one, in them instilling spiritual discipline and instructing them in the practical aspects of the lives of Canonesses. She visited new communities, preaching the great and fulfilling love of God while leading in the very best example.

She died om January 9 1622 at the monastery in Nancy and was buried at the cemetery in the monastery.
