He was an outstanding scholar and received his education in Aquila, Italy. He attained doctorates in both civil law and canon law in Perugia, Italy.

On March 12, 1445, he joined the Franciscan Friars Minor in Perugia, taking the name Giovanni Bernardino and receiving the habit from Saint James of the Marches.

Throughout his life, he held various administrative positions in different Franciscan monasteries in the regions of Umbria and Abruzzi in Italy.

He devoted himself to evangelism in Italy, Dalmatia, and Serigonia. He served as the provincial of his Order in Italy from 1454 to 1460, as well as the provincial in Dalmatia and Bosnia from 1464 to 1467.
