Blessed Bernardine of Fossa’s Life History
Blessed Bernardine of Fossa, originally named Giovanni Amici, was born in 1420 in Fossa, Aquila, Italy, to a noble family known as the Amici family.
He was an outstanding scholar and received his education in Aquila, Italy. He attained doctorates in both civil law and canon law in Perugia, Italy.
On March 12, 1445, he joined the Franciscan Friars Minor in Perugia, taking the name Giovanni Bernardino and receiving the habit from Saint James of the Marches.
Throughout his life, he held various administrative positions in different Franciscan monasteries in the regions of Umbria and Abruzzi in Italy.
He devoted himself to evangelism in Italy, Dalmatia, and Serigonia. He served as the provincial of his Order in Italy from 1454 to 1460, as well as the provincial in Dalmatia and Bosnia from 1464 to 1467.
Additionally, he worked as the attorney general for the Roman Curia from 1467 to 1469 and later served as the provincial in Italy from 1472 to 1475.
Bernardine was twice offered the position of bishop of Aquila but declined both times, citing his belief that he was not suited for the role.
He was renowned as a historian and writer on asceticism, and many of his sermons have survived to this day. Notably, he authored the first biography of St Bernardine of Siena.
Blessed Bernardine of Fossa died on November 27, 1503, at the Franciscan convent in L’Aquila, Italy. He was beatified on March 26, 1828, by Pope Leo XII, who confirmed his cultus.
