Blessed Miguel Agustin Pro Biography

Blessed Miguel Agustín Pro was born on January 13, 1891, in Guadalupe, Zacatecas, Mexico. He was the son of a mining engineer and grew up in a pious and privileged household.

Even from a young age, he was known for his high spirits and cheerfulness, and he had a deep affinity for the poor and the working class. Despite his privileged background, he had a strong commitment to serving those in need.

Miguel entered the Jesuit novitiate at the age of 20, and his studies led him abroad. During the tumultuous period of the Mexican Revolution, he faced exile.

He was ordained as a priest in Belgium in 1925, at the age of 36. When he returned to Mexico in 1926, he faced a challenging time when churches were closed, priests were in hiding, and government policy persecuted the Church.

Father Miguel Pro resorted to using disguises to continue his ministry underground, providing comfort, charity, and the sacraments to the faithful who were forced into secrecy.

In 1927, he was falsely accused of being involved in a bombing attempt, which made him a wanted man. He was betrayed to the police and, without a fair trial, he was sentenced to death.

Facing his execution, Father Pro displayed remarkable courage and faith. He forgave his executioners, refused a blindfold, and was executed by a firing squad on November 23, 1927, in Mexico City, Mexico.

His final words were “Long live Christ the King!” Even though the government prohibited a public funeral, faithful individuals lined the streets to pay their respects as his body passed.

Blessed Miguel Agustín Pro was beatified on September 25, 1988, by Pope John Paul II in Saint Peter’s Square.
