Blessed Valentin Paquay Life History
Jan Louis Paquay or better known as Joannes Ludovicus Paquay was born in November 17 1828 in Tongres, Limburg, Belgium. His parents were Hendrik Paquay and Anne Neven and he was the fifth born of eleven children.
Valentin Paquay first studied literature at a college in Tongres and joined St. Trond seminary school to study for priesthood but two years later, he left school after his father died in an unexpected twist in 1847. He then joined the Fransiscans and made his vows on October 4 1850, taking the name Valentine. He later resumed studies and received his holy orders June 10 1854 and was assigned to a monastery in Hasselt, Belgium, where he lived the rest of his life.
Valentin Paquay was a noted, popular and an eloquent preacher and served as a provincial definitor. In the monastery he was assigned, he served as sub-prior and prior of the house and was also guardian and vicor of the Fraternity of the Franciscan Order of Hasselt for 26 years. He was known to be a constant writer. It was believed that he had the power to read and penetrate a visitor’s conscience and due to this he became the most sought-after confessor and spiritual director. He had a profound devotion to the sacred heart of Jesus and the Eucharist and personally advocated frequent participation of the communion. He was known to have prayed the way of the cross each and every day.
Valentin Paquay lived a God fulfilling life and passed away at the age of 76 on January 1 1905 in Hasselt, Limburg, Belgium due to natural causes.
