Blessed Vincent de L’Aquila Biography
Blessed Vincent de L’Aquila joined the Friars Minor at age 14 at the convent of San Giuliano outside L’Aquila, Italy and lived in a hut in the forest near the convent. He only came out of that hut when going for services, Mass, or when called upon by his superiors.
While in prayer, he would levitate in the air and sometimes appeared to be unconscious.
He was assigned to serve in several convents in Penne and Sulmona before returning to San Giuliano. His exemplary example led others to live a pious life and become more committed to their vocation.
Many people sought out his advice, even princes and queens, because of his humility and gift of prophecy.
Due to the hardships of his life, Vincent suffered gout and was eventually confined to his hut where he spent his final days in prayer and giving spiritual advice to visitors.
On the evening of August 7 1504 while in his hut in the forest outside the convent of San Giualiano near L’Aquila, Italy, Blessed Vincent de L’Aquila died and the entire forest around his hut was lit by a great light.
This led to a custom of lighting the convent and the part of the nearby forest every year overnight on August 6, the eve of his death and commemoration.
His relics are interred in the church of the San Giuliano convent.
Blessed Vincent de L’Aquila was beatified on September 19 1787 by Pope Pius VI through cultus confirmation.
