Parish Short History

In 1943, the Catholics of Bay Minette got a penny stamp postcard from Daphne. The postcard read: “Dear companions, beginning September 26th (10 am) we will have Sunday Mass for the Catholic individuals of Bay Minette at the home of Mr. what’s more, Mrs. Ed Lemerise. Confiding in your collaboration, I am earnestly yours in Christ, Fr. Jim Loughlin.” Previously, Mass was being offered in the homes of the couple of Catholics in Bay Minette at whatever point a mission cleric from either Mobile or Montgomery made it to town. With the landing of this post card, things changed and on September 26th, 1943 Mass started being offered each Sunday in Bay Minette at the home of Mr. also, Mrs. Edward Lemerise.
While mass was routinely being offered in the Lemerise home, there was as yet not a solitary Catholic church in a 3,000 square-mile region until 1946. St. Agatha Church was one of four missions set up in 1946 with St. Robert Parish in Atmore being the mother church and Father John Horgan, the minister. About five years after the fact in 1951, the liberal monetary help of the Catholic Church Extension Society of America took into account the development of St. Agatha Church at the intersection of Hand Avenue and Tenth Street which was about a square from the Lemerise home. The principal mass inside the little ash square church was commended by Father Horgan on July 22, 1951 while the commitment of the new church occurred on February 17, 1952 with Bishop William O’Brien of the Extension Society and Bishop Thomas Toolen.
Ministers kept on serving Saint Agatha Church as a mission of Saint Robert Parish until on November 20, 1974 Saint Agatha Parish turned into an autonomous area with Father Thomas Weise as the main minister. Since turning into its own ward, Saint Agatha has kept on developing and extend. The development can be seen by the extension of the physical structures of Saint Agatha Parish: another area corridor which was built in 1978; the redesigning of the Church in 1982; and the broadening and rebuilding of the ward lobby in 2001. Holy person Agatha ward keeps on developing and right now there are more than 150 families who love and serve the Lord through Saint Agatha Parish.
