Parish Short History

Over two thousand years ago the ancestors of Melkite Christians of Middle-Eastern origin, led by St. Peter, established Christianity in Antioch (Syria). According to the Acts of the Apostles (11:26), these disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. Parishioners of St. George Melkite Catholic Church, of Birmingham, Alabama are descendants of these Christians from Antioch.

Today, Antioch is no longer a great missionary city, but the spirit of Antioch lives on in St. George Church.
St. George is a parish of the Melkite Diocese of Newton, MA; a nationwide diocese of around 50 parishes, missions, and outreaches. They are the only Melkite Church of Antioch in Alabama.
