20,000 Martyrs of Nicomedia’s Biography
20,000 Martyrs of Nicomedia are the Christians who were martyred in sequence in a single incident during the persecution of Diocletian. To begin with, there were 8 imprisoned Christians namely, Domma, Esmaragdus, Eugene, Hillary, Maximus, Peter, Migdonus and last but not least Mardonius, about whom we know a little more than their names.
For eight days, each and every one of them would be strangled to death in the presence of the others so that they would spend their night in dread, not knowing whether they were next in line.
Peter was the chamberlain or butler in the palace of Diocletian. When he was overheard complaining about his cruelty, he was exposed as s Christian, tortured, arrested and executed by having the flesh torn from his bones, salt and vinegar poured on the wound, and then being roasted to death over a slow fire.
Gorgonio was an army officer and member of the staff in the house of emperor Diocletian. Dorotea was a staff clerk. They were exposed as Christians when they were overheard objecting to the torture and murder of Peter. This let to their own torture, arrest, and executions.

20,000 Martyrs of Nicomedia
In accordance with different martyrologies and menologion, the persecution included the burning of a church that held numerous Christians on Christmas Day.
The event took place when the emperor Maximian returned with a victory over Ethiopians in 304 AD. This occurs after they have refused to sacrifice to idols during Christmas Mass in order to thank god for the victory he has got. Later on, Maximian and his soldiers entered the church and told the Christians they could escape the punishment if they only renounced Christ.
The Christian priest Glycerius answeres that Christians will never “renounce their faith, even under the threat of their torture” Maximian orders for his to be burning to death. For the ones that their burning did not occur in the church, are captured and torture to death.
The only one who manages to escape the burning in the church was called bishop Anthimos who unfortunately got captured and beheaded. The number of martyrs was 20,000 and may be apocryphal. moreover, the martyrs of Nicomedia continue to be honored with feast days.
