Blessed Alfonsa Clerici Biography
Blessed Alfonsa Clerici was born on February 14, 1860 in Lainate, Italy. She was the eldest of eleven children of Angelo Clerici and Maria Romano. Her family was poor, but a religious family. Two of her brothers became monks, while one sister became a sister in the same congregation as her (Sister of the Precious Blood). In 1875, Alfonsa received a master’s degree from the College of the Sisters of Precious Blood in Italy.
Career
She taught at Lainate Elementary School from 1880 to 1883. While teaching and later working as a teacher. Alfonsa felt called to the religious life, but her work helped to provide for the family, and she stayed there. On August 15, 1883, she taught at the College of Monza and was on November 22, 1898 director of the college. She held this position until 1907. Alfonsa was also Secretary, Council Sister and Assistant General to her Institute. In November 1911 she was called to head the college Ritiro della provvidenza in Vercelli, which was a facility for orphan girls. In Vercelli she stayed there for eighteen years.
Death
She died at 1:30 pm on January 14, 1930, in Vercelli of a cerebral hemorrhage, suffered on the night of 12 to 13 January 1930 while at prayer. She was buried in Vercelli, but in 1965 her remains were moved to the chapel of the Sisters’ College in Monza.
Venerated
On June 22, 2004, she was venerated by Pope John Paul II.
