Biography

Blessed Benigno of Vallumbrosa, might have been a relative of St. John Gualbert. Youthful priest likely appointed in the area of Florence, Italy. He appears to have had a disappointment at administrative control; his biographer composed that Benigno “fell into transgression”. To reconsider his life and call to livelihood, he made a journey to the graves of the messengers in Rome, Italy, after which, to change his life, he joined the Benedictine Vallombrosans, c.1180. As a priest he turned into a model of compensation, devotion and modesty. To focus on his retribution, he lived as a hermit in a cell close to the Vallombrosa religious community.

Abbot of the San Salvi cloister outside Florence, Italy c.1190. Abbot of the Vallombrosa religious community and General of the Order in late 1201 or mid 1202; he served for more than 30 years and ruled during the time of the Order’s most prominent flourishing and extension. He attempted to keep up control to the Vallumbrosan Rule, and carry harmony to Orders and houses in struggle of the case of against pope Callistus III.

Abbot Benigno cherished the relics of Saint John Gualbert on 10 October 1210, assembled the new church in Vallombrosa, a task that took six years to finish, added more cells to the religious community for those craving to live as hermits, and fabricated an oratorium. In his last years, some time in 1234, Benigno surrendered his initiative position, and resigned to live in a hermit’s cell, doing day by day atonement for the mistakes of his childhood.
