Blessed’s Biography

Blessed Devasahayam Pillai was born as Neelakanda Pillai on April 23, 1712 in India. He came from a wealthy family of high caste. Pillai was raised by his uncle on the mother’s side, and he was early imprinted with Hindu faith and traditions. Married layman. He was converted to Christianity and was baptized on May 14, 1745 in the diocese of Kottar, India. After that he changed his name to Devasahayam meaning Lazarus. He was arrested and tortured on February 23, 1749. For 3 years, Devasahayam was hauled from village to village as an example of what would happen to Christian converts. He was shot by firing squad on January 14, 1752 in Aralvaimozhi, Tamil Nadu, India.
