Blessed’s Biography
Blessed Giles of Laurenzana was born in 1443 in Laurenzana, Italy as Bernardin de Bello. He came from a modest peasant family and his parents were Bello di Bello and his wife Caradonna Personi, and he had a brother named Vitalis (Vitale).
Giles was a gardener before he entered the Franciscan Order at thirty and became a lay brother in the local Franciscan monastery. He lived as a hermit within the monastery garden walls at Laurenzana.
As gardener Giles had a special love for animals, especially the birds and it is believed that he used to speak to them about God. Giles’s life was full of miracles as he had raised a dead man back to life and could see the future. Satan used tormented him at night because of his faith in God.
Giles was Illiterate but because of his simplicity and wisdom, many sought his prayers and advice. He loved Blessed Mary and persuaded everyone to turn to her for help.
Death
He died on January 10, 1518, in Laurenzana, Italy of natural causes and his body which was incorrupt can be still seen in a glass case at Laurenzana.
