Blessed John Sordi Biography
He was also known as:
- John de Surdis
- John Cacciafronte
- Giovanni de Surdis Cacciafronte
Blessed John Sordi was born on 1125 AD at Cremona, Italy. He was a Benedictine monk at the abbey of Saint Lawrence in Cremona, Italy. John was an Abbot in 1155. He then sided with the Pope against Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, and hence was banished from the abbey by the emperor. Blessed John was also a hermit near Mantua, Italy.
He became the Bishop of Mantua in 1174 AD, replacing a bishop removed for transgressions in office. In 1177 AD, his predecessor repented, returned, and requested the return of his see.
John then asked permission to resign, return the mitre to the previous bishop, and return to his life as a hermit. The request was fortunately granted, and John later transferred to Vicenza, Italy.
Bl. John was murdered by a man who had embezzled Church funds, and whom John was reprimanding. As he died working for the Church, and correcting a sinner, he is then considered a martyr.
Bl. John’s Death
He was murdered on 16 March 1183 AD at Vicenza, Italy.
