Bl. Józef Zaplata was born to a poor peasant farmer where he never managed to study past the elementary level. He joined the army and later the Brothers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1927 making his profession on 8 September 1928 and his last vows on 10 March 1938 in Poland.

Jozef also served in the office of the archbishop in Poznan, Poland.
He was later arrested by Gestapo and was deported, imprisoned in different camps starting from Mauthausen, Gusen and finally Dachau. while in prison, he contracted a certain disease, typhus while caring for infected persons in the prisons. Died as a martyr of mercy.
