Blessed’s Biography

Blessed Macarius the Scot was born in the 11th century in Ireland. He became a Benedictine monk and left home to Würzburg, a city in Germany that had acted as a magnet on Irish pilgrims.

In 1139 AD, he was elected the first abbot of the monastery of St. James, founded by Bishop Embricho. He established a hospital there to serve pilgrims in 1139 AD. Macarius the Scot was known for his good works, his simple ascetic life, and as a miracle worker.

Death

He died on January 6, 1153, at Würzburg, Germany of natural causes and his tomb re-discovered in 1614. Macarius the Scot remains re-interred at the altar of the monastery church in 1615. 

The monastery was secularized in 1803, and in 1823 his relics were enshrined in the Lady Chapel at the market square of Würzburg. The chapel destroyed in 1945 during World War II
