Blessed’s Biography

Blessed Matthew of Agrigento was born in 1377 on the Via Arco di San Francesco di Paola in Rabbato, Agrigento, Italy. He was studied in Bologna, Italy, where Matthew majored in theology. Later, Matthew studied in Spain, 1400 ordained a priest. He worked in Catalonia for years as a teacher and preacher. Saint Bernardine of Siena and him worked together in 1417. On September 17 1442 Pope Eugene IV appointed Matthew as bishop of Agrigento.

Achievements

Matthew built founded monasteries in Italy and Spain (Santa Maria di Gesù in Palermo). As a bishop, he was a victim of slander and retired to the convent of Palermo, where he died on January 7, 1450. He was buried at the Santa Maria di Gesù monastery.
