Blessed’s Biography
Blessed Michel Fleury was born in a poor peasant family. In 1971 he joined the Prado congregation and worked as a miller in Lyon and Marseilles in France. Michel became a Trappist monk in Bellefontaine Abbey in 1981 and moved to Algeria in 1985, where he worked as a cook and housekeeper of the Atlas Abbey of Tibhirine, near Médéa.
He was among the seven monks who were abducted during the civil war in Algeria during the night of March 26-27, 1996. They were detained for two months and then murdered because they were Christians.
