Blessed Sylvester of Assisi Biography

Blessed Sylvester of Assisi was born in one of the noble families in the city. He was the son of Rosone di Monaldo, the brother to Favarone di Monaldo, who was the father of St Clare of Assisi. Sylvester became one of the first followers of St Francis of Assisi.

They ordained blessed Sylvester a priest and became a canon of the cathedral of San Rufino in Assisi. The story of Sylvester’s change of life reports that, in 1209, he had originally sold some bricks to Francis, who then after his dramatic renunciation of his family, who had been on a campaign to repair the rural chapels around the city which had fallen into disrepair.

He later then saw Francis with Bernard of Quintavalle, a local nobleman determined to follow Francis and his way of life. He was in the middle of giving his entire fortune away to the poor. Diving prey to greed, Sylvester claimed that they had paid him a little for the bricks he had previously sold to Francis and requested a just compensation, by which they gave him.

Blessed Sylvester’s Early life

Sylvester came to regret this spirit of greed in him afterward. He too renounced his position and joined Francis, being the first priest in the ancient fraternity. Sylvester was known for in the order for his strict observance of the life of lack and thought. Sylvester together with his cousin, Clare, later on, he prayed for enlightenment to discern God’s will for Francis. He frequently escorted Francis during his preaching tours. Already in the city of Arrezo, the residents Sylvester’s prayers and preaching claimed it brought about peace to the city of which was falling prey to violence and hatred amongst its citizens.

Saint Bonaventure, through a special way, alludes to the visions which Sylvester had about Francis. The death of Sylvester was in 1240. He is one of Francis’ four initial colleagues who is buried close to his tomb in the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi. The source for his canonization was opened by the Friars Minor and has been received by the Holy See for further study.
