Blessed Tullio Maruzzo Biography
Blessed Tullio Maruzzo had a twin brother Lucio. They were members of the Order of Friars Minor. Both he and his brother Lucio were Ordained as priests on June 21st, 1953. On missionary work to Guatemala in 1960, they fought for the rights of the poor against wealthy landowners. They were later killed by anti-christian guerrillas.
Early Life
Bl. Marcello Maruzzo was born in Vicenza, Italy in 1929. He was the son of poor peasants Angelo Maruzzo and Augusta Rappo. Bl. Marcello was one of eight children. He had a twin called Daniele though he later came to be known as Fra Lucio. Their mother passed on September 21, 1940.
Career
Both Bl. Maruzzo and his twin brother Daniele both joined the Order of Friars Minor in 1940. They then both received their ordination from Cardinal Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli. Cardinal Angelo became the future Pope John XXIII on June 21, 1953. Bl. Marcello studied for the priesthood in Chiampo. His first vesting in the habit was in 1945 and his profession in 1951.
In December 1956 his brother left Italy to be a missionary in Central America. Maruzzo followed his brother leaving for Guatemala in 1960. At first, he settled in Puerto Barrios on December 16, 1960. There he learned Spanish to be able to communicate with the local communities. He helped with their needs and celebrated Mass with them. However, he also moved from village to village working with the local Caritas distributing provisions to the poor. This was while also defending the rights of the poor. He preached the message of the Gospel to them, a friend to the poor and the homeless.
Death
Bl. Maruzzo received warnings, threats, and intimidation trying to stop his work. Accused of being a “communist priest”, His superiors feared for his safety. They transferred Bl. Maruzzo somewhere else, but the threats persisted. It was during his final placement that he met and worked alongside Bl. Luis Navarro, who was a catechist and a driver.
Both He and Navarro were at a church meeting when they were ambushed and shot dead at 10:40 pm on July 1, 1981.
