Blessed Victor Chumillas-Fernández Biography

Blessed Victor Chumillas-Fernández was the son of Alfonso and Catalina Chumillas-Fernández, religious parents of six children. He was baptized at the age of two days. His father died when the boy was quite young and had to work to help support his family. However, he was early drawn to religious life and was moved by the Martyrs of Japan. He began evangelizing as a young layman, repeating the homilies he heard in church.

He entered the Franciscan Friar Minor novitiate on 2 August 1917 in Pastrana, Guadalajara, Spain and made his first profession in Avila, Spain on 4 August 1918. Victor was later ordained in Toledo, Spain in 1925 and taught, and served as rector of students in several Franciscan seminaries. He also became the manager, editor, publisher and writer for the Franciscan magazines “Cruzada Seraphic” and “Hogar Antoniano” from 1931 through 1936.

He established the magazine Comet with essays on science, art and religion. Victor was a noted preacher and catechist with a ministry to the sick and spiritual director of Franciscan tertiaries and Poor Clare nuns. He was evicted from his convent three days into Francisco Franco regime where he and his Franciscan brothers were imprisoned, moved from place to place, and finally killed in the persecutions of the Spanish Civil War.
