Biography
Blessed William Andleby, William Andleby was conceived in Etton, Yorkshire into a nobility family. At 25 he went to the Netherlands to participate in the Dutch war. He visited Douay College just wondering and met William Allen; an exchange prompted his change, and in the long run Andleby turned into a Catholic cleric, being appointed 23 March 1577, alongside Ralph Sherwin. Andleby came back to England in April 1578.
At first he worked alone. As per Challoner, “For the initial four years of his central goal he voyaged dependably by walking, selfishly attired, and conveying with him as a rule in a pack his vestments and different things for saying Mass; for his works lay mostly among poor people, who were not stunned with such things.”
Later Andleby obtained a pony, and around 1587 worked with another Douai minister and local of the Riding, William Atkinson. They voyaged generally from Richmond through York to Howden, Hemingbrough and Hull. He is known to have taken his service to Mr. Tyrwhitt’s, in Lincolnshire, and furthermore to the Catholic detainees in Kingston upon Hull’s blockhouse.
After around 20 years, he was captured and denounced as a Catholic cleric. He was executed at York with three laymen: John Abbot, Thomas Warcop, and Edward Fulthrop.
