Biography
Blessed William of Hirsau, (or Wilhelm von Hirschau) (c. 1030 – 5 July 1091) a Benedictine abbot and ascetic reformer. Abbot of Hirsau Abbey, Würtemberg, Germany. Made the Constitutiones Hirsaugienses, in view of the employment of Cluny. Father of the Hirsau Reforms, which impacted numerous Benedictine cloisters in Germany. He bolstered the papacy in the Investiture Controversy. In the Roman Catholic Church, he is a Blessed, the second of three stages toward acknowledgment as a holy person.
He reestablished the house’s scriptorium, presented the Cluniac recognition, and saw to the training and improvement of the ranchers living on convent lands. Established a cloister school and seven monasteries. Bolstered Pope Gregory VII against Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV in the disagreement about lay instatement. Composed various insightful treatises.
