Biography
St. Atilano was born on October 5, 1901. For much of his young life, he worked as a ranch hand for his family. He began studying for priesthood at the age of 17. He became ordained in July 1927. However, he began his priestly ministry at a time when the Mexican government was at its most violent phase of the persecution of the Catholic. He worked in the Archdiocese of Guadalajara, Mexico. He ministered and converted Catholics giving out sacraments in secret and hiding from the authorities.
A year after his ordination he was sent to Cuquío. There the parish was being run from a ranch house, called “Las Cruces”. In the early morning of July 1, he was captured by soldiers. While he was praying at the foot of his bed St. Atilano was shot by soldiers. While still alive his body was carried to Cuquío. There their bodies were dragged through the central square till they died.
