St. Caedmon Biography
St. Caedmon was a layman who in the later years worked with animals in the monastery of Whitby. One night in 657 AD, he had a vision which directed him to praise God with hymns and equipped him with poetic skills to do so.
Since he was illiterate, the brothers would read it to him and then repeat it as poetry. Whitby’s abbess became a Columban lay brother.
