Saint’s Biography

Saint Canute Lavard was born on March 12 in 1096 in Roskilde, Denmark. He was the second son of King Eric I and Queen Bodil. Knut parents died on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land when he was six years old. At sixteen, Knut was sent to further education with the Saxon Duke. At his court, he not only received a political and military education, but he was also introduced to a more advanced European culture and way of life. In 1114 he returned home and found his fatherland were slaves from Saxony and Prussia.

Knut spent years defending against Viking raids and supported the missionary work of Saint Vicelin. He married Ingeborg, daughter of a Russian great prince and became the father of King Valdemar I, who worked for Canute’s canonization. He was murdered in 1131 by his cousins Magnus Nielsen and Henry Skadelaar in the forest of Haraldsted in Zeeland, Denmark. Knut was declared a martyr for justice and his relics enshrined at Ringsted on 25 June 1170.
