Saint Euphrasia Biography

Saint Euphrasia, born in the Roman nobility, the daughter of Antigonus, Senator of Constantinople. Associated with the Roman Emperor Theodosius I, who completed the transformation of Rome into a Christian state. Her father died shortly after the birth of Euphrasia; she and her mother became wards of the Emperor.

When Euphrasia was only five years old, the emperor arranged a marriage with the son of a senator. Two years later, she and her mother moved to their country in Egypt. There, Euphrasia entered a monastery as a child; Her mother soon died for natural reasons, leaving the novice as an orphan.

At the age of twelve, Emperor Aracdius, successor to Theodosius, ordered Euphrasia to marry the senator's son by agreement. Euphrasia has requested that she dissolve the marriage agreement, sell her family's property, and pay the price. Arcadius agreed and Euphyrasia spent her life in the Egyptian monastery.

Known for her prayer life and the constant self-imposed fasting; Sometimes she spent the day carrying heavy stones from one place to another to exhaust her body and keep her mind from temptation. She suffered from gossip and false accusations, much of it was a foreigner in her house. She is held up by Saint John Damascene as a model.
