Biography

St. Flavian of Constantinople was a patriarch of Constantinople in 446 AD. He condemned the heresy of Monophysitism and refused to bribe Emperor Theodosius II in order to hold his position.

Lacking the wishes of Theodosius, he made the emperor’s sister Pulcherius a deaconess. Theodosius had him exiled. Later, when he tried to appeal Pope Leo the Great to hold his seat, the emperor had him beaten to death.
