Saint’s Biography
Saint Gaetano Catanoso was born on February 14, 1879, in Italy. His parents were Antonio Catanoso and Antonia Tripodi, wealthy landowners. In 1882 he was baptized. In October 1889 Cajetan Catanoso began the Archbishop’s seminar inReggio Calabria. After finishing, he became a priesthood on September 20, 1902, by Cardinal Gennaro Portanova.
Gaetano Catanoso was appointed parish priest in 1904 in eastern Pentedattilo, where he stayed until 1921. In 1921, Catanoso became the parish priest of the church of Santa Maria de la Candelaria in Reggio Calabria. There he revived the Eucharistic and the Marian devotions. He encouraged public missions, especially during Lent and May.
St. Gaetano Catanoso was also a hospital priest and spiritual counselor at the Archbishop’s priesthood seminar. In 1929, he dedicated himself as “a sacrifice of love” to the Holy Heart of Jesus. In 1950, he moved the headquarters of the brotherhood of Jesus’ face to Reggio Calabria.
Death
Gaetano Catanoso died on April 4, 1963, in Reggio Calabria, aged 84, after spending his last days in continuous prayer. His reputation for holiness gradually increased. His memorial day is the day of death, April 4th.
