Saint’s Biography

Saint George the Younger was born in Greece around 776 from a rich and religious family. At the age seventeen, he used his fortune to help the sick and poor, entered a monastery to dedicate his whole life to God. He was elected unanimously to be the bishop at the age of only twenty-seven. For nine years he was the pastor of this local Church, always persevering in his life of penance and charity.

In 813 the harassment of the government forced him to go to Constantinople. To defend the rights of the church George stood against emperor Leo and was exiled to Ukraine.

Since he could no longer take care of the pastoral care of his faithful, he returned to the anchorite route but was weakened by ascetic practices and after six years following a long illness. He died on 7 April 820 or 821. His remains were buried in Chersonese, later transferred to Mitylene. George of Militene tomb became a scene of miraculous healings.
