St Gerald’s Biography

St Gerald of Mayo was a monk at Lindisfarne, England. He was a friend of Saint Colman of Lindisfarne. He was also a monk at Innisboffin, Ireland in668. Gerald was the head of the Monks at Mayo of the Saxons abbey in 670, a house for the English monks in Ireland.

While there, he served until 697 when he resigned in favor of Saint Adamnan. He saw the supplanting of the Celtic rite with the Roman rite in his abbey.

St Gerald established the abbey of Elytheria in Connaught, Ireland of Teaghna-Saxon and a convent which was led by his sister Segretia. St Gerald is said to might have been bishop of Mayo in Ireland, though the records vary.
