St. Golvinus of Leon Biography

Saint Golvinus of Leon was the son of Immigrants from the British Isles. Gordian a wealthy owner of land without children, became his godfather and eventually foster father. Gordian took care of his education, from an early age Golvinus was attracted by abstinence.

being content with bread and water and showing tenderness and devotion. Having finished his studies, Goulven began to evangelize the people.

Goulven ultimately went into the forest. There, facing the sea, he constructed his hermitage. Also, he erected three crosses to guide his daily journey. He led a religious life led by prayer, atonement, and working with a disciple named Maden.

In the year 602 AD, Goulven was unanimously elected as the Bishop of Leon. This was despite him going on a trip to Rome to avoid being elected.  He lived in Rennes for reasons pertaining to the governance of his diocese.  A couple of years before his death, he retired to Saint-Didier, near Rennes. He constructed a little chapel there and ended his life in severe penance. This meant leading the life of a hermit. He died in 616, most likely at Saint-Didier. He was buried in Rennes’ Saint-Melaine Abbey. His relics are now the property of Saint-Pierre Cathedral in Rennes.
