Saint’s Biography

Saint Hildebert was abbot of St Peter’s Abbey in Ghent. It was the time in the Byzantium that the struggle for icons who (lived in the Byzantium of the 8th and 9th centuries) had begun.

The Byzantine emperor Leo III (717-740) was an avid supporter of icons. He was succeeded by his son Constantine V, nicknamed Copronymus (740-775). This was possibly even crueler and fanatic than his father. His influence even extended to the city of Ghent. There, the icons caused a riot, tried with all force to reinforce their disastrous ideas and thus left a trail of destruction in churches and chapels. Hildebert resisted in public. In doing so, he evoked the hatred of his opponents. They managed to get him and killed him: April 4, 752.
