St Iosephus Chang  Biography

He was also known as:

  • Joseph, Giuseppe, José
  • Yosep Jang Ju-gi

St Iosephus Chang Chu-gi was born in 1803 AD in Suwon, Kyonggi-do, South Korea. He was born to a wealthy family with a history of working as diplomats. He was Married.

St Iosephus converted to Christianity when he was an adult and was baptized at the age of 26 along with his entire family and he began serving as a catechist while conducting classes first in his home and then in a small building he bought and maintained for that purpose in Paeron, Korea.

On four occasions, Iosephus hides in the mountains to avoid government persecution of Christians, and he finally moves to the Jecheon area to escape them in 1845 AD. When Saint Siméon-François Berneux builds a seminary in the area, he offers his house for its use and works in its administration. He and his wife become farmers to help feed the seminarians. He together with his wife is arrested in March 1866 AD.

A local official arranges their release, but five days later, Iosephus gets an arrest again. He now confesses in court to being a Christian, teaching Christianity, not only to help missionaries but also to owning the building where the catechists have been working for many years. He gets imprisoned, tortured and eventually executed for his faith and his work. Martyr.
