Saint Jaime Hilario Barbal Biography
Saint Jaime Hilario Barbal, growing up in a pious and industrious family near the Pyrenees. He entered the seminary at the age of 12, but when his teenage hearing ceased, he was sent home. At the age of 19, joined the brethren of the Christian schools and entered the noviat on February 24, 1917 in Irun, Spain, under the name of Jaime Hilario. He was an extraordinary teacher and catechist and firmly believed in the value of universal education, especially for the poor. His hearing problems worsened, however, and in the early 1930s he began working in the garden of LaSalle House in San Jose, Tarragona, Spain.
Imprisoned in July 1936 in Mollerosa, Spain, when the Spanish Civil War broke out and was religiously wiped off the streets. Relocated to Tarragona in December and imprisoned with other religious on a prison ship. Sentenced on 15 January 1937 for Christian brother. Two rounds of salvo from a squad did not kill him, possibly because some soldiers deliberately shot wide. Her commander killed Jaime with five shots at close range. First of the 97 LaSalle brothers killed during the Spanish Civil War in Catalonia, Spain
