Saint Jean-Théophane Vénard Biography
He was raised a Christian family having one of his brother a Priest, another a Bishop at Poitiers, France. Jean studied at the college of Doue-la-Fontaine and Paris Seminary for Foreign missions for his missionary studies. He was alter ordained on June 5, 1852 where he served as a missionary at the southeast Asia until 19 September 1852. He moved to Hong Kong serving for 15 years before a transfer to Vietnam.
On arrival, he found that Christians were being persecuted by a ruler, Minh-Menh. In addition, anti-Christians were forcing priests and bishops to go to hidings in caves and forests. On betrayal, he was arrested on November 30, 1860 and tried for the crime of being a Christian. However, he was given an opportunity to save himself by denying Christ but he refused.
He was kept in a cage for several days before his prosecution a period which he spent writing a series of joyful and consoling letters to his family. He is one of the Vietnam Matyrs.
