Saint’s Biography

Saint John was an official of the Vilnius court to the great lighthouse Algirdas of Lithuania (1345-77). He was secretly baptized and named John. Saint John refused when the Great Prince would force him to eat meat on an abstinence day and for this, he was subjected to torture. In prison together with his brothers preached and the prison was transformed into a Christian school. The frightened pagan priests demanded that the brothers be executed, but they did not fear death.

He was crucified on a tree on December 13, 1342, at Vilna, Lithuania and initially buried in Holy Trinity Russian-Greek Church at Vilna.
