Biography

Saint Kenelm, Mercian prince, the child of King Coenwulf. Adored as a kid ruler and a martyr in the Middle Ages, however his history ended up blended with devout legends, one of which says he was murdered on requests of his sister.

Referenced in the Canterbury Tales’ Nun’s Priest’s Tale. Admired John Henry Newman made continuous journeys to the altar of St. Kenelm’s suffering. For a long time the residents of Kenelstowe, England observed St. Kenelm’s Day with the old custom of “crabbing the parson” – barraging the parson with crab apples!
