Saint Lucian of Antioch was born in Samosata in Syria. He became a priest in Antioch. Lucian founded a theological school, and one of its members was Arius. Lucian was involved in the schism in Antioch and made peace with the Church in 285. He was arrested in Nicomedia in the persecutions of Diocletian and imprisoned there for nine years. Twice Lucian was questioned, defending himself adequately and refusing to deny Christ.
He was starved to death and killed by a sword in 312. His body was transported to Drepanum (later renamed Helenopolis) by Emperor Constantine.
His memorial is January 7 (Western Church) and October 15 (Eastern Church).
