St. Marcian of Chalcis Biography
St. Marcian of Chalcis was born to a noble family and became a soldier, commander and a member of the imperial court. He left the earthly life to become a hermit at Chalcis near Antioch. His reputation for holiness attracted many students that he founded a monastery for them. It is said that when he wished to read at night, a light from heaven would shine down on him.
