Pope Saint Hyginus Short life History

Pope Hyginus was also known as Hygin, Igino.

He was Pope during a period of relative peace with no official persecutions of the early Church, but was forced to deal with a series of heretic sects and preachers regularly popping up.

He was born in Athens, Greece and became pope in 138 AD. He died in 142 AD in Rome, Italy.

He is often listed as a martyr since so many of the early popes were, but there is no evidence of it for Hyginus. He was buried on Vatican Hill near the tomb of Saint Peter the Apostle.

Today’s Pope Saint Hyginus Feast Day Quote:

The ancient sources contain no information as to his having died a martyr
