St Matilda of Saxony was born in Enger near Herford, Westphalia, Germany. She was the daughter of Count Dietrich of Westphalia and Reinhild of Denmark. Matilda was brought up by her grandmother who was the head of nuns of the Eufurt.

Matilda left the abbey in 913 and got married to King Henry the Fowler of Saxony, who had received a repeal from a previous marriage. She was the queen of Germany.

She was the mother of Otto who was a Holy Roman Emperor. Henry the Quarrelsome who was the Duke of Bavaria. Saint Bruno the Great who was the Archbishop of Cologne, Germany. Gerbega the wife of King Louis IV of France. Hedwig who was the mother of Hugh Capet. She established several Benedictine abbeys.

Matilda was well known throughout the realm for her generosity. She used to teach the ignorant, comfort the sick and visited prisoners. After Henry’s death, she was betrayed by Otto when he falsely accused her of financial mismanagement.
