Saint’s Biography

Saint Robert was born in 1027 in a distinguished family in France. In 1044, he became a Benedictine monk and later abbot in Moûtier-la-Celle. Robert and his new community moved to Molesme in Burgundy in 1075. Robert left as an abbot in Molesme and settled with these and other monks.

On March 21, 1098, along with Saint Alberic, he founded the Cîteaux monastery. The goal was to live strictly according to Benedict’s rule, withdrawn and in poverty. Robert become the first abbot and saint Alberic become the second and he provided the inner edification. St. Stefan Harding, the third abbot of Cîteaux, completed the founding of a new branch of the Benedictine order through legislation.

St. Robert of Molesme Death

Robert remained abbot in Molesme for the rest of his life and died there on March 21, 1110, 83 years old.
