Biography
Saint Theotonius of Coimbra was the nephew of the Bishop of Coimbra in Portugal and schooled at the University of Coimbra. He then became a parish priest where he was assigned to work in Viseu, Portugal. His powerful preaching against several vices gave him a great reputation as well as the affection of the King and the Queen.
Theotonius rebuked the queen for adultery and even rejected a bishopric offer from her seeing it as an attempt to corrupt his affection. He was in a time asked by the queen to shorten a mass service to attend to other functions and answered the queen so sovereignly that she could decide to stay or leave.
Theotonius had a great devotion to the poor and the souls in Purgatory where every Friday he sang a solemn mass for the dead, collecting alms and distributing it to the poor locals.
He spent his last 30 years in a monastery in Coimbra as a monk and a prior.
