Catholic Daily Reflections – October 3, 2026 – Saturday of the Twenty-sixth Week in Ordinary Time – Gospel: Luke 10:17-24

Success feels good. The promotion. The growing business. The applause. The followers. The breakthrough.

The disciples returned excited because even demons obeyed them in Jesus’ name. But Jesus redirected their excitement. Do not build your identity on what you accomplish.

Your greatest reason for joy is not that you are powerful, talented or successful. It is that you belong to God.

Main Reflection

The seventy-two disciples return from their mission celebrating extraordinary results. It worked! People listened. Lives changed. Even evil spirits submitted to them in Jesus’ name.

You can almost feel their excitement. Then Jesus says something unexpected.

Yes, He acknowledges the authority they have been given. But He tells them not to make that power the foundation of their joy. Instead, rejoice because your names are written in heaven.

In other words: Do not confuse what you accomplish with who you are. That lesson is urgently needed today.

Achievement Can Become an Identity

We live in a world of numbers. Salary. Profit. Grades. Views. Followers. Subscribers. Sales. Awards. Promotions. Performance targets.

There is nothing wrong with measuring progress. Excellence matters. But numbers become dangerous when they begin determining your worth.

You succeed, and suddenly you feel important. You fail, and suddenly you feel worthless. Your business grows, and you feel blessed. It struggles, and you begin questioning yourself.

People applaud your talent, and you feel confident. They stop noticing you, and your confidence disappears. Jesus offers a stronger foundation. Your identity must be deeper than your latest result.

Your Gifts Are Tools, Not Your Identity

This also changes how we understand our talents, gifts, skills, passions and knowledge.

Perhaps you are an excellent teacher. A brilliant doctor. A gifted entrepreneur. A creative artist. A strong leader. A skilled technician. A compelling speaker.

Thank God for those abilities. Develop them. Use them well. Become excellent.

But never become so attached to what you can do that you forget who you are before God. Because circumstances can change. The athlete eventually slows down. The executive eventually retires.

Technology can make an old skill less valuable. Businesses can fail. Audiences can move elsewhere. Health can change.

If your entire identity is built on performance, what happens when performance changes? Your gift is something you possess. It is not the whole definition of you.

Success Should Produce Gratitude, Not Pride

The disciples had achieved something remarkable. Yet Jesus directs their attention back to God. That is a powerful lesson for anybody becoming successful.

When your work begins producing results, do not start believing: “I am better than everybody.” “I did this entirely by myself.” “Nobody can replace me.”

Success should make you more grateful, not more arrogant. Your intelligence did not create itself. You did not choose the circumstances of your birth.
You did not manufacture every opportunity.

Other people taught you. Someone opened a door. Someone encouraged you. Someone bought from you. Someone trusted you. Someone prayed for you. And above everything stands the grace of God. So celebrate progress. But remain humble.

Become Childlike, Not Childish

Jesus then praises the Father because the mysteries of God have been revealed to the childlike. That does not mean Christians should reject education or intelligence.

Jesus is pointing toward humility and openness. A child knows he does not know everything. That attitude is especially important for talented people.
Knowledge can quietly turn into arrogance.

Experience can make us stop listening. Success can make correction feel offensive.

But wisdom says: “I still have something to learn.” The best teacher can still learn. The experienced businessperson can still receive advice. The skilled professional can still improve.

The mature Christian can still be corrected. Keep your confidence. But keep your teachability too.

Today’s Call to Action

Think about one area where you are currently succeeding. Thank God for it.

Then ask yourself: “Has this success made me more grateful or more proud?” Now think about one area where you are struggling.

Remind yourself: “This difficulty does not determine my worth.”

Then use your strongest ability today to serve rather than impress. Teach. Help. Solve. Encourage. Create. Lead.

But do it without needing applause. Your greatest achievement is not being admired by the world. Your deepest joy is knowing that you belong to God.

Today’s Resolution

Today, work hard. Develop your gifts. Pursue excellence. Celebrate genuine success. But never make achievement your god. Serve with humility. Speak with kindness. Carry your responsibilities with faith.

Work so well that someone can sincerely say: “Thank you. May the God you worship be praised and glorified.”

Let your abilities help people. Let your success make you grateful. Let your life testify that: God is real. God is good. And God is at work in you.

And when something succeeds, never say: “I made it entirely by myself.”

Say instead: “It is through the strength, grace and providence that God gives me.”

Your achievements may change. Your titles may change. Your circumstances may change.

But never forget the greater joy: You belong to God.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for every gift, opportunity and success You have allowed into my life. Protect me from pride and from measuring my worth only by what I accomplish.

Help me develop my abilities with excellence while remaining humble, grateful and teachable. When I succeed, remind me to give You glory. When I struggle, remind me that failure does not define me. May everything I do become an opportunity to serve others faithfully. Amen.
