Catholic Daily Reflections – September 23, 2026 – Wednesday of the Twenty-fifth Week in Ordinary Time, Memorial of Saint Pius of Pietrelcina, Priest. Gospel: Luke 9:1-6
You do not need everything before you begin. Not perfect conditions. Not unlimited money. Not applause. Not every answer.
Jesus sent the Twelve with what He had already placed in them: authority, a mission and His command.
So stop measuring your calling by what you lack. Ask instead: What has God already placed in my hands?
Reflection
Jesus calls the Twelve, equips them, and sends them out. He does not tell them to wait until everything is comfortable. He tells them to go, proclaim the Kingdom, confront evil and bring healing.
Then He tells them to travel lightly. That matters. The mission must not become dependent on possessions.
Many people postpone meaningful work because they think they need more money, qualifications, equipment, followers or confidence. Preparation matters. Training matters. Resources matter.
But sometimes “I am preparing” becomes another way of saying, “I am afraid to start.”
Your Gifts Are for Mission
Jesus equips the disciples before sending them. That gives us a powerful way to think about our talents, gifts, skills, passions and knowledge.
What God has allowed you to develop is not decoration for your résumé. It can become equipment for service.
Maybe you can teach, organize, build, communicate, lead, heal, farm, create or solve difficult problems.
The important question is not only: “What am I good at?” Go further: “Whom can I serve with what I am good at?”
A gift reaches its deeper value when it becomes useful beyond yourself.
Purpose Gives Your Gifts Direction
Talent and purpose are not the same thing. A gift tells you what you can do. Purpose helps answer why and for whom you should do it.
That is why before you can effectively serve God, you must identify and know why God created you and for what purpose. Then you can intentionally use your talents, passions, skills and knowledge in service of that purpose.
Begin by noticing what you do well, the problems you feel drawn to solve, the needs that move your heart, and the responsibilities people consistently trust you with. Pray for discernment. Then serve.
Purpose often becomes clearer while you are doing something useful.
Do Not Worship the Tools
Jesus also teaches us to travel lightly. Your tools must serve your mission. Your mission must not become a slave to your tools.
A creator can obsess over equipment and forget the message. An entrepreneur can chase money and forget the people being served.
Excellence and resources matter, but they are means, not the purpose. You do not need the most expensive camera to encourage someone.
You do not need a huge company to solve a customer’s problem honestly. You do not need thousands of followers before your knowledge can help one person.
Sometimes God is asking you to stop staring at what you do not have and start using what you already have.
Today’s Call to Action
Choose one ability God has given you and ask: “Where can this become useful today?”
Teach one person. Help one customer honestly. Encourage someone. Write the first page. Make the first call. Offer the skill. Begin the project you have prayerfully discerned.
The disciples were sent. So are we.
Today, serve with humility. Speak with kindness. Carry your responsibilities with faith.
Do your work so well and with such excellence that someone can say: “Thank you. May the God you worship be praised and glorified.”
Let your life show that God is real, God is good and God is at work in you.
And when success comes, never say: “I made it entirely by myself.”
Remember the source of your strength, opportunities and abilities. Say instead: “It is through the strength, grace and providence that God gives me.”
You may not have everything. But if God has given you a mission, begin faithfully with what is already in your hands.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me recognize what You have entrusted to me. Give me wisdom to understand my purpose and courage to use my talents in service. Free me from fear and excuses. Teach me to work with humility, excellence and trust. Send me where I can bring truth, hope and help to others. Amen.
