1st Reading – Exodus 32:15-24, 30-34

15 Moses returned from the mountain, carrying the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, written on both sides,

16 and accomplished by the work of God. Also, the writing of God was engraved on the tablets.

17 Then Joshua, hearing the tumult of the people shouting, said to Moses: “The outcry of battle is heard in the camp.”

18 But Moses responded: “It is not the clamor of men being exhorted to battle, nor the shout of men being compelled to flee. But I hear the voice of singing.”

19 And when he had approached to the camp, he saw the calf and the dances. And being very angry, Moses threw down the tablets from his hand, and he broke them at the base of the mountain.

20 And seizing the calf, which they had made, he burnt it and crushed it, even to dust, which he scattered into water. And he gave from it to the sons of Israel to drink.

21 Moses said to Aaron, “What have these people done to you, so that you would bring upon them the greatest sin?”

22 Aaron answered him: “Let not my lord be indignant. For you know these people, that they are prone to evil.

23 They said to me: ‘Make gods for us, who may go before us. For this Moses, who led us away from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has befallen him.’

24 And I said to them, ‘Which of you has gold?’ And they took it and gave it to me. And I threw it into the fire, and this calf came out.”

30 Then, when the next day arrived, Moses spoke to the people: “You have sinned the greatest sin. I will ascend to the Lord. Perhaps, in some way, I might be able to entreat him for your wickedness.”

31 And returning to the Lord, Moses said: “I beg you, this people has sinned the greatest sin, and they have made for themselves gods of gold. Either release them from this offense,

32 or, if you do not, then delete me from the book that you have written.”

33 And the Lord answered him: “Whoever has sinned against me, him I will delete from my book.

34 But as for you, go and lead this people where I have told you. My angel will go before you. Then, on the day of retribution, I will also visit this sin of theirs.”

Responsorial Psalm – Psalms 106:19-20, 21-22, 23

R. (1a) Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.

19 Our fathers made a calf in Horeb
and adored a molten image;
20 They exchanged their glory
for the image of a grass-eating bullock.
R. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.

21 They forgot the God who had saved them,
who had done great deeds in Egypt,
22 Wondrous deeds in the land of Ham,
terrible things at the Red Sea.
R. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.

23 Then he spoke of exterminating them,
but Moses, his chosen one,
Withstood him in the breach
to turn back his destructive wrath.
R. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.

Alleluia – James 1:18

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
18 The Father willed to give us birth by the word of truth that we may be a kind of first-fruits of his creatures.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel – Matthew 13:31-35

31 Jesus proposed a parable to the crowds. “The Kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a field.

32 It is the smallest of all the seeds, yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants. It becomes a large bush, and the birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.”

33 He spoke to them another parable. “The Kingdom of heaven is like yeast
that a woman took and mixed with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch was leavened.”

34 All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables. He spoke to them only in parables,

35 to fulfill what had been said through the prophet: I will open my mouth in parables, I will announce what has lain hidden from the foundation of the world.
