Saint’s Biography
Pope Saint Benedict II was the son of John from the Roman family Savelli. As a boy, he was incorporated into the clergy and had studied at the Pope’s Cathedral School. Ordained a priest and was known for his care for the poor. After Leo II died on July 3, 683, Benedict was elected the new Pope early in July 683 but had to wait for the Emperor of Byzantine to approve the election. On June 26, he became Pope after an interval of over eleven months. He worked with Spanish bishops to restore orthodoxy in their dioceses. Restored many churches in Rome and endowed deaconries to care for the poor.
