Blessed Adele de Batz de Trenquelluon’s Life History
Blessed Adele de Batz de Trenquelluon was born on June 10 1789 AD, Feugarolles, in Lot-et-Garonne. Kingdom of France, from Baron Charles de Trenquelleon and Marie-Ursule de Peyronnecq de Saint Chamarand and was baptized on the day of her birth.
Her family was granted permission to go into exile in Spain since her father had fled to England for refuge in November 1791 after an attack attempting to rescue King Louis XVI failed. They were then expelled from Spain at the request of the French government and settled in Portugal where the family reunited, then back in San-Sebastian, Spain after France allowed its refugees to seek refuge there.
There, she got her first communion on January 6 1801 in Santa Maria Church and after their return to their family Chateau in November the same year, she later received her confirmation on February 6 1803 AD.
She had earlier in San-Sebastian, been exposed to the presence of the Carmelite nuns, who had inspired her to consider living a religious life and on August 5 1803, she and some friends formed a spiritual union called the Little Society, whose goal was to create a network of women who would support each other in their faith. It included young women from the countryside, a few priests and by 1808 had 60 members who grew to 200 members by 1814, all taught of the fundamentals of the Christian faith and by this time, Adele having assisted so many sick and poor member of the community by teaching them on the faith.
Her mother brought her to the attention of a group in Bordeaux, run by William Joseph Chaminade, who later began corresponding with her. Chaminade’s movement after she had received information about the movement.
Despite challenges of the time which included government restrictions on Chaminade’s work and religious activity, she managed to keep her work alive. Even through her illness in 1810 AD, she still worked to assist the less fortunate in the community. Efforts to create a religious order were proving due to restrictions posed on religious houses nationwide, but after the first fall of Napoleon Bonarpate from power in 1814 AD, she managed to establish her order which took the characteristics of a mission movement as advised by William Chaminade.
It was after Napoleon’s second fall from power in 1816, that she finalized the formation of her religious congregation, known as the Marianist Sisters, that entailed mission work and the contemplative nature of the Carmelites she so admired.
Adele developed an illness in 1825, but still was persistent in her service. She suffered stomach problems the following year and her situation worsened. It was at this time that she was working to attain legal recognition of her congregation, which she succeeded while still combating her illness. She died of tuberculosis in Agen, on January 10 1828 and was buried at a convent there.
