St Basilius of Ancyralso knwown as Basil was a layman in Ancyra, Galatia (today Ankara, the capital of Turkey). He lived under Emperor Julian Den Frafalne (Apostate) (361-63) and boldly confessed his faith in Christ.
He was tortured in Ancyr and sent to Constantinople where he was hung from a tree, stretched on the bench, whipped, spit with red-hot needles, was also thrown into a glowing furnace, but was not damaged.
Finally, he was sent to Caesarea, where he was torn by lions in the arena. This happened once in 362. St Basilius is depicted with a lioness by his side, sometimes he is torn to pieces by the lioness.
