Saint Berno of Cluny’s Life History
Bernon, french for Berno, was born in Burgundy, France, in 850 AD from frech noble family. His father Odon, was known to have given aid to the Benedictine community from Glanfeuil Abbey after being driven out by Norman attacks in 862 AD.
He grew up to later join the Benedictine abbey of Saint Martin at Autun. he was kater sent to restore the monastery of Saint Peter at Gigny with his own funds in 890 AD and 4 years later received papal approval for the charter of Gigny.
He was also sent to Baume by abbot Hugh of Autun and was asked to take over the leadership of the abbey there as his reputation for holiness preceeded him.
During his abbacy in Baume, he got acquainted to William of Aquitainne and due to his goos reputation was given the monasteries at Deols and Massay to govern and reform. He received part of Williams fiefdom of Cluny in order to set up a monastery upon the Duke’s request to form one which was founded on September 11 909 AD.
They together set up the authority over the monastery so that it would be free from local authorities and only be governed by the Pope alone from whom it received all its charters from.
Berno was said to have governed six monasteries, which were at; Baume, Gigny, the abbey of Aethicans of St. Lautens, Deols, Massay and Cluny. He gave his six monasteries to two of his monks, Wido and Odo before dying on January 13 927 AD.
